An ox at full stride is an unusual subject among Eadweard Muybridge's studies, and this albumen print comes from his experiments at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. It appeared as plate 80 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a book Muybridge copyrighted in 1881. He lined up multiple cameras along a track, with trip wires triggering the shutters as the animal passed, so each exposure froze a single moment of the stride. These sequences helped answer long-standing questions about how animals move, and the same technique later influenced the development of motion pictures.
