Among the many animal studies in this collection, this one shows a greyhound caught mid-stride, one of the consecutive positions Eadweard Muybridge recorded for plate 76 of *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. He made the series at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras that tripped as the animal passed. The project grew out of a question posed by Leland Stanford about whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge's sequences answered that question and became a foundation for the moving pictures shown on this board.
