Rather than a horse or a person, this plate shows a greyhound caught mid-stride, one of the animal studies in Eadweard Muybridge's book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. Muybridge made the series at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a battery of cameras to record a moving animal in rapid succession. The project grew out of a long-running question about gait: whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. This albumen print, copyrighted in 1881, reflects the sequence method that later became central to the development of motion pictures.
