Among the many animal studies Eadweard Muybridge made at Stanford's Palo Alto property, this print shows a dog caught mid-stride, one of a numbered series of consecutive positions. The image comes from *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a book of sequence photographs that Muybridge copyrighted in 1881, and the photographs were made at Palo Alto in 1878 and 1879. Muybridge was working on the question of whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground, and his method of triggered cameras along a track helped move photography toward the moving picture. Its albumen print surface gives the dog's motion a crisp, early-photographic clarity.
