A cow caught mid-stride at a run, this albumen print is plate 83 in Eadweard Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. He made the series at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, setting a row of cameras along a track and triggering their shutters with tripwires as the animals passed. The project grew out of Leland Stanford's question about whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once, and the sequences that followed changed how artists and scientists understood animal movement. The title, "Cow, irregular," is the catalog's label for this particular gait.
