Plate 69 in Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* shows a horse in an irregular gait, and its subject headings also list a carriage, so the print records both animal movement and the horse-drawn vehicles of the day. The 1881 volume gathered sequences made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, where Muybridge used a row of cameras that the passing horse tripped open. The work grew out of Leland Stanford's question about whether a galloping horse ever has all four feet off the ground at once, and the images went on to influence painters and scientists who studied motion.
