Among Muybridge's Palo Alto studies, this plate stands out for pairing a horse with a carriage, a reminder that the work covered working animals as well as racehorses. It was made during the 1878 and 1879 sessions at Leland Stanford's stock farm, where a row of cameras fired as a horse passed along a track, a method built to settle whether all four hooves leave the ground during a gallop. Published in 1881 as *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, the plate shows how sequential photography could break down movement the eye could not follow, and that approach later fed directly into the development of motion pictures.
