Muybridge labeled this plate "Horses. Irregular," marking it as a gait outside the standard walk, trot, or gallop. It is number 64 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a book copyrighted in 1881 that drew on photographs taken at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Muybridge had set up his cameras there to answer a question about whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. The sequence approach behind plates like this one helped lay groundwork for motion pictures, which is why the image appears on a gallery board devoted to film.
