Plate 65 in Eadweard Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* is labeled "Horses. Irregular," a title that points to an uneven gait rather than the smooth, regular movement shown in many of the other horse studies. Muybridge made these photographs at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, working for Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle a public argument over whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge's answer was a row of cameras fired in quick succession, which turned a single moment into a sequence of images. The albumen print, copyrighted in 1881, is one of the works that helped make motion studies a foundation of early cinema.
