Plate 66 in Muybridge's book shows a horse in what the title calls an irregular gait, a sequence of positions set apart from the regular walk, trot, and gallop. The series was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, where Muybridge used a row of cameras triggered by tripwires to freeze motion the eye could not follow. The work grew out of a bet by Leland Stanford, the railroad magnate and horse breeder, over whether all four hooves leave the ground at once during a gallop. Issued as an albumen print and copyrighted in 1881, these sequences became a foundation for motion study and early film.
