Rather than a horse at a steady gait, this plate is titled for irregular movement, and its subject list includes a carriage, which sets it apart from the straightforward gait studies in the series. Muybridge made the photographs in 1878 and 1879 at Palo Alto, Leland Stanford's property, using a row of cameras whose shutters were tripped by threads stretched across the track. The plate appeared in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* in 1881, where it was meant to show what a horse's legs actually do in motion, a question painters had long answered by guesswork.
