Among the Palo Alto sequences, this print stands out for its title, which describes the horse's movement as irregular rather than an even gait, and for its subject index, which also lists a carriage or coach. It comes from Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where it appears as plate 70 of a series he made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Muybridge arranged a row of cameras along a track and triggered them as the animal passed, producing a run of frames that broke down motion too quick for the eye to follow. Images like this helped settle long debates about how horses actually move, and they laid groundwork for the moving pictures shown on this board.
