Eadweard Muybridge's record for this print is titled *Horses. Irregular*, and it appears as plate 63 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a book drawn from experiments he carried out at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Muybridge set up a row of cameras that were triggered by tripwires as horses passed, producing rapid sequences of frames. The work was partly prompted by Leland Stanford's question about whether all four hooves leave the ground at once during a gallop. This albumen print, copyrighted by Muybridge in 1881, shows how a single animal's motion could be broken into separate moments well before motion pictures became common.
