This plate, indexed under the heading "Horses. Irregular," comes from Eadweard Muybridge's studies of horses in motion at Palo Alto. The series was made in 1878 and 1879 on Leland Stanford's property, where a row of cameras fired in quick succession as a horse ran past. Published in 1881 as *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, the sequence was meant to settle long-running questions about how a horse's legs actually move, and it became one of the earliest photographic records of animal locomotion.
