Muybridge's title, *Horses, Irregular*, marks this print as a study of an unusual gait rather than a standard one, and it appears as number 60 in his book on animal motion. The photographs were made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on the farm of Leland Stanford, who hired Muybridge to settle a question that had divided horsemen for generations: whether a galloping horse ever has all four feet off the ground at once. Muybridge's multi-camera sequences helped show that it does, and his published plates became some of the first widely circulated records of motion broken into separate frames.
