Muybridge's "Horses. Irregular" belongs to a sequence made at Leland Stanford's horse farm in Palo Alto, California, where in 1878 and 1879 he set up a row of cameras along a track to photograph galloping horses. This print comes from the 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where it is numbered 62 in the series of plates showing consecutive positions of a moving animal. The "irregular" in the title refers to a gait that departs from the even, regular stride of the other plates, and it is the kind of detail that shows how carefully Muybridge catalogued his subjects. Seen today, the set of frames still stands as an early step toward motion pictures.
