Among the Palo Alto studies Eadweard Muybridge made for his book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, this numbered plate breaks a runner's stride into a row of successive poses. The photographs were taken in 1878 and 1879 with a set of cameras along a track, triggered by trip wires, which let Muybridge capture movements too quick for the eye to separate. The project grew out of a wager over whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground, and the athletic figures show how the same method applied to people. The copyright was registered in 1881, the year this albumen print appeared.
