Rather than a horse or other animal, this plate shows human runners, captured in a numbered sequence of albumen prints (no. 99) in the 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. The photographs were made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, where Eadweard Muybridge arranged a row of cameras with trip wires to freeze motion in fractions of a second. The project grew out of Leland Stanford's question of whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground, and the book's plates extended the same method to athletes. The copyright date of 1881 marks when the series was published.
