Eadweard Muybridge caught this runner mid-leap during a running long jump, one of the athletic subjects he recorded at Palo Alto, California. The sequence was made in 1878 and 1879 and published as plate 101 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, copyrighted by Muybridge in 1881. The project began with a question from Leland Stanford about whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground, and Muybridge answered it with a line of cameras triggered by tripwires. The same method was turned on people, so the jumper's body can be read one moment at a time.
