Plate 103 in Eadweard Muybridge's *Attitudes of Animals in Motion* shows an athlete in a walking high leap, with the movement broken into a row of frames so each stage can be studied. Muybridge made the series at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a battery of cameras whose shutters were tripped as the subject passed a background ruled with lines for measure. The work grew out of Leland Stanford's question about whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground, and the human studies extended that inquiry into how the body moves. This albumen print was copyrighted in 1881.
