Among Eadweard Muybridge's Palo Alto studies, this print shows athletes walking, broken into a row of separate exposures that capture each step. It comes from the 1878 and 1879 sessions in Palo Alto, California, and was published in 1881 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where it sits among the plates on human movement. Muybridge's work began with a question from Leland Stanford about whether a galloping horse ever has all four feet off the ground, and his cameras, triggered by tripwires, made motion visible in a way the eye could not. Worth noticing is how ordinary the gait looks, and how the sequence turns a casual walk into a study of balance and rhythm.
