A walking high leap, plate 102 in Muybridge's sequence, shows an athlete caught mid-motion as he approaches and clears a bar. Eadweard Muybridge made these studies at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras whose shutters were tripped by threads as the subject passed. The series was later gathered into *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* and published in 1881, the year of this albumen print's copyright. Muybridge's work was meant to settle a question about how bodies move, and this sequence of jumping poses remains a useful record of late nineteenth-century athletic technique.
