Among Muybridge's sequences, this print is distinctive for pairing horses with human walkers and runners, drawn from plates 187 through 191 of his 1881 book on animal motion. The series was made at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto horse farm in 1878 and 1879, where Muybridge set a row of cameras along a track and triggered their shutters as the subjects passed. The resulting frames broke motion into a sequence of positions, helping settle the long-running question of whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge's experiments also laid groundwork for motion pictures, which is why the image is often studied in film history.
