Muybridge's cantering horse is one of the sequence studies he made at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property in 1878 and 1879, when a row of cameras was triggered by tripwires as a horse passed. Printed by Muybridge in San Francisco around 1881, this albumen print was reproduced in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, which published the series as a book of consecutive positions. The sequence answered a question painters and horsemen had argued over for generations: whether a cantering horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge's images helped settle that debate and became foundational to the study of motion in photography and early film.
