Plates 181 and 182 in Eadweard Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* present a running horse as a sequence of consecutive positions, and this print is one of those illustrations. Muybridge made the photographs at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras whose shutters were tripped by threads stretched across the track as the animal passed. The project was backed by Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Copyrighted in 1881, the series became a landmark in the study of motion and an early step toward the moving pictures that followed.
