Made at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto horse farm, this albumen print is one of Eadweard Muybridge's studies of a running horse, taken with a row of cameras that were triggered as the animal passed. The project was meant to settle a long-running argument about whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge collected these images in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, copyrighted in 1881, where this motion study appears as one of its plates. Its value lies in breaking a fast movement into a sequence of readable poses, a method that later helped lead to motion pictures.
