Among the plates in Eadweard Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* is this view of running horses, numbered 153 and 154 in its index and made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Muybridge set a row of cameras along a track, each triggered by a tripwire as the horse passed, to capture stages of a stride too quick for the eye to separate. The work was commissioned in part by Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle whether all four hooves leave the ground at once during a gallop. The sequence helped make Muybridge's photographs a landmark in the study of motion.
