Muybridge's "Horses. Running" is one of the sequence studies made at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property in 1878 and 1879, when Muybridge set a row of cameras along a track and triggered them as a horse passed, capturing the animal's stride in successive frames. This albumen print was issued around 1881 and appeared in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where it is numbered among the plates. The pictures settled a long-running argument over whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once, and they remain a landmark in the early history of motion pictures.
