Eadweard Muybridge's sequence of a galloping horse at Palo Alto, California, was made in 1878 and 1879 on the estate of Leland Stanford, who had a stake in the question of whether all four hoofs left the ground at once. Muybridge set a row of cameras along a track and tripped each shutter with a wire as the horse passed, producing a series of separate exposures. This albumen print, copyrighted in 1881, reproduces one of those plates from *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a book that helped turn the experiments into a widely seen record of animal movement and an early step toward motion pictures.
