Among the Muybridge horse studies, this print comes from *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* (1881), where it appears as one of a numbered pair of plates. The series was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, when Leland Stanford hired Muybridge to settle a long-running dispute over whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground. Muybridge answered it with a row of cameras triggered by strings stretched across the track, and the resulting sequences helped establish the stop-motion method that later fed into early motion pictures.
