Plates 137 and 138 from Eadweard Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* show a running horse caught mid-stride, one of the sequences made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Muybridge worked there for Leland Stanford, the railroad builder and horse breeder who wanted to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge answered the question with a row of cameras whose shutters were tripped by wires strung across the track, freezing each moment in a fraction of a second. The series helped lay the groundwork for motion pictures, which is why these Palo Alto experiments still draw attention.
