Eadweard Muybridge's sequence of a horse at a full run belongs to the 1878 and 1879 experiments at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property, where cameras were set in a line along a track and tripped by the passing animal. This albumen print was issued as one of the plates in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* (1881), and its title and copyright notice tie it to that book. The series answered a question that had divided painters and horsemen for generations: whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. The sequential frames showed that it does, and the images helped shift how artists drew horses in motion, and later how filmmakers thought about movement itself.
