Eadweard Muybridge's series of horse studies was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on the estate of Leland Stanford, who had a stake in proving that a galloping horse lifts all four hooves off the ground at once. This albumen print was copyrighted in 1881 and appeared in Muybridge's book "The Attitudes of Animals in Motion," where it illustrates one step in a sequence of consecutive positions. Viewed alone, the image is a still, but it was built from a row of cameras triggered by tripwires, and its place in that series is what gives it meaning.
