Taken at Palo Alto, California, this print comes from Eadweard Muybridge's series of consecutive-motion studies of horses made in 1878 and 1879, here numbered 147 and 148 in his book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. Leland Stanford, who owned the horse-breeding farm where the work was done, wanted to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge answered with a row of cameras triggered by tripwires, and his sequences became an early landmark in the study of movement and, later, in the development of motion pictures.
