Muybridge's "Horses. Running" comes from a series he made at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property in 1878 and 1879, when a row of cameras fired in quick succession as a horse galloped past tripwires. This albumen print was published in 1881 as part of The Attitudes of Animals in Motion, where it shows the consecutive poses of a running horse as sequential frames. The sequence was a direct answer to a question that had divided horsemen and painters for generations: whether all four hooves leave the ground at once during a gallop. Worth noticing is how the picture turns a single fleeting moment into a record that the eye could study one step at a time.
