Among the many Muybridge horse studies, this print is marked as a cantering sequence, a gait in which the horse's legs move in a three-beat rhythm that the naked eye could not resolve. The photograph comes from *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a series of images made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879 for Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle whether all four of a galloping horse's hooves ever left the ground at once. Edward Muybridge's battery of cameras, triggered by tripwires along a track, produced the consecutive frames that became a foundation for the study of motion and, later, for the development of motion pictures.
