Rather than a single horse, this print shows a pair of plates from Eadweard Muybridge's book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* (1881), which record a trotting horse and a walking horse at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Muybridge set up a row of cameras along a track and tripped their shutters in quick succession as the animal passed, so that the sequence of frames broke a single stride into its component positions. The work was done for Leland Stanford, the former governor who owned a horse breeding operation there, and it was aimed at settling questions about how horses actually move. Its importance lies in showing that the eye could not reliably see those fast motions unaided.
