Here a horse is shown moving from a walk into a trot, with the sequence of positions laid out to show how its legs change during the shift. Eadweard Muybridge made the series at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras triggered as the animal passed, and the result appeared in his 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. The subject index also lists carriages, a reminder of how often horses were harnessed to vehicles at the time. Muybridge's stop-action frames later served as the basis for projected moving images, which is why his work is often cited as an early step toward motion pictures.
