Muybridge's sequence of a horse shifting from a walk into a trot was made at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras triggered by tripwires as the animal passed. This print, published in the 1881 book The Attitudes of Animals in Motion, shows the moment of transition between the two gaits, which had long been argued over by horsemen and painters who could not see the rapid leg movements with the naked eye. The subjects listed for the image also point to the carriage and coach context of the Stanford stables, where such horses were kept. Muybridge's work from this period helped settle the question of how a horse's legs actually move in each gait.
