Among the plates in Eadweard Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* is this one, numbered 57 in the book's index, showing horses at a trot and a run. The series was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on a track at Leland Stanford's horse farm, where a row of cameras fired in quick succession as the animals passed. Stanford had commissioned the work to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once, and the sequences became some of the first photographs to freeze motion in this way. Muybridge copyrighted the book in 1881, the year this print is dated.
