Number 43 in Eadweard Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* shows a horse at a run, one of a sequence of consecutive positions photographed at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Leland Stanford, the railroad magnate and horse breeder, commissioned the work to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge used a battery of cameras triggered by tripwires to break the motion into separate frames, something the eye could not follow unaided. The series drew wide attention and influenced painters and, later, the development of motion pictures.
