Plate 39 in Eadweard Muybridge's book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* shows a running horse broken into a sequence of consecutive positions. Muybridge made the series at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, working for Leland Stanford, the railroad magnate and horse breeder who wanted to settle whether a galloping horse ever lifts all four hooves off the ground. Muybridge answered that question with a row of cameras triggered by tripwires along the track, an early demonstration of photography's power to freeze motion too fast for the eye to follow.
