This albumen print is plate 36 in Eadweard Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* (1881), and it shows a running horse broken into a series of consecutive positions. The sequences were made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on land tied to Leland Stanford's horse breeding interests, and Muybridge used a row of cameras triggered by tripwires to freeze strides too quick for the eye to follow. The plates helped settle a long-running argument about whether all four hooves leave the ground at once during a gallop, and they remain a landmark of early motion photography.
