Among Eadweard Muybridge's Palo Alto studies, this albumen print shows a horse at full run, one of the sequence photographs published in his 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. The series was made in 1878 and 1879 at Leland Stanford's horse-breeding farm, where Stanford wanted to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge answered that question with a row of cameras triggered by tripwires, and the resulting frames helped lay the groundwork for the moving pictures shown on this board.
