A running horse, numbered 41 in Eadweard Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, appears here in a sequence of consecutive positions captured at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Muybridge made the series at the request of Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge's answer came from a row of cameras triggered by tripwires along the track, and the resulting images were among the first photographs to freeze motion in fractions of a second. The 1881 copyright date and the book's index reference tie this print to that publication, which helped change how artists and scientists understood animal movement.
