Muybridge's running horse here is plate 42 from his 1881 book on animal motion, one of a series made at Leland Stanford's horse farm in Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. The photographs were meant to settle a long-running argument over whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once, a question the naked eye could not answer. Muybridge used a row of cameras with trip wires stretched across the track so that each shutter fired as the animal passed. The sequence later became a touchstone in the history of motion pictures.
