Plate 37 from Eadweard Muybridge's *Attitudes of Animals in Motion* breaks a running horse into a series of consecutive positions, made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Muybridge used a row of cameras whose shutters were tripped by threads stretched across the track, which froze the movement in fractions of a second. The work grew out of a question posed by Leland Stanford, who wanted to know whether a galloping horse ever lifts all four hooves off the ground at once. The copyright date of 1881 matches the year the full collection was published.
