Muybridge's sequence of a horse shifting from a walk into a trot was made at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property in 1878 and 1879, the same series that produced the famous gallop photographs. This albumen print is the plate numbered 54 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, published under Muybridge's copyright in 1881. Its value lies in the timing: the consecutive frames show the gait change that a casual observer could not follow with the eye, a question of great interest to horsemen and artists of the period.
