A single sequence frame captures a horse shifting from a trot into a run, one of the gait transitions Eadweard Muybridge studied at Palo Alto. Working for Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle whether a horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once, Muybridge set up a line of cameras in 1878 and 1879. Images like this one, numbered plate 58 in his 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, were printed as albumen prints and helped show motion that the eye could not follow in real time. The series is often cited as an early step toward motion pictures.
