Among Eadweard Muybridge's Palo Alto studies, this print shows a trotting horse broken into a row of consecutive positions. It appears as one of the plates (nos. 135 and 136) in his 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. The photographs were made in 1878 and 1879 on Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property, where a line of cameras was triggered by threads stretched across the track as the horse passed. The series addressed a long-running dispute about what a horse's legs actually do in motion, and it remains a landmark in the early history of photography.
